Ingredients

6 slices of thick-cut bread (brioche or challah recommended)

3 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon salt

2 medium apples (preferably Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1/4 cup chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts, optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Maple syrup for serving (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Arrange the thick-cut bread slices in a single layer in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Ensure the slices are snug but not overlapping.

Make the Egg Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, brown sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt until the mixture is completely combined and frothy.

Prepare the Apples: In a separate bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice to prevent browning. Carefully fold the apple mixture—and the chopped nuts if using—into the egg mixture, ensuring all ingredients are evenly coated.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the apple-egg mixture evenly over the bread slices in the baking dish. Gently press down on the bread to help it soak up the custard mixture. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and set it aside to rest for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the bread to absorb the flavors.

Bake: Remove the foil and place the baking dish in the preheated oven. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating that the eggs are fully set.

Serve: Once baked, remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. If desired, dust the top lightly with powdered sugar. Serve warm with a generous drizzle of maple syrup for added sweetness and enjoy!
