Ingredients

For the tart crust:

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced

¼ cup powdered sugar

1 large egg yolk

2-3 tablespoons ice water

For the apple filling:

4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

½ cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

For the maple glaze:

½ cup pure maple syrup

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

A pinch of salt

Optional garnish:

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Instructions

Prepare the Tart Crust:

    - In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and powdered sugar. Add the chilled, diced butter. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, blend the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

      - Add the egg yolk, followed by ice water, one tablespoon at a time. Mix gently until a soft dough forms, being careful not to overwork it. Once combined, shape the dough into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

        Make the Apple Filling:

          - In a separate bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples with the lemon juice, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and the additional flour. Toss the mixture gently until all the apple slices are well coated. Allow the mixture to marinate for about 15 minutes, letting the flavors meld.

            Preheat the Oven:

              - Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

                Roll Out the Crust:

                  - On a lightly floured surface, roll out the chilled tart dough into a circle large enough to fit a 9-inch round tart pan. Carefully place the rolled dough into the pan, pressing it evenly into the bottom and up the sides. Trim any excess dough hanging over the edges.

                    Assemble the Tart:

                      - Spoon the marinated apple filling evenly over the prepared crust, arranging the apples neatly for a beautiful presentation. Consider sprinkling a pinch of cinnamon on top for added flavor and decoration.

                        Bake the Tart:

                          - Place the assembled tart into the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust is a delicious golden brown and the apples are tender.

                            Prepare the Maple Glaze:

                              - While the tart is baking, combine the maple syrup, unsalted butter, pure vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently until the butter is melted and the mixture is warmed through.

                                Glaze the Tart:

                                  - After baking, remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Drizzle the warm maple glaze over the tart, allowing it to soak in for a lovely touch of sweetness.

                                    Serve:

                                      - Allow the tart to cool slightly before slicing into it. Serve warm, optionally topped with whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream to elevate this delightful dessert to an extra-special treat!
